Portable Electricity to Rural Communities

Bono Region, Ghana – A new community-focused energy project is set to bring affordable portable electricity to rural and village areas across the Bono Region.

The initiative is being led and funded by local e-bike company E-Bono, which plans to use a smart, low-cost power system inspired by how electric bike batteries work.

How the Project Will Work

E-Bono’s idea is simple and practical.

Just like e-bike batteries can be:

  • Removed
  • Recharged
  • Replaced
  • Shared

The company wants to introduce portable home power banks that can do the same thing.

Each household will receive a small rechargeable battery unit that can power:

  • Lights
  • Mobile phones
  • Small TVs
  • Radios
  • Fans
  • Low-energy appliances

When the battery runs low, families can:

  • Recharge it at a central solar charging station
    or
  • Swap it for a fully charged one, just like replacing an e-bike battery.

Solar-Powered Charging Stations

To keep costs low, E-Bono will install solar charging hubs in selected villages. These hubs will use sunlight — which is abundant in the Bono area — to charge multiple batteries daily.

This means:

  • No expensive fuel
  • No noisy generators
  • No heavy electricity bills
  • No need for long power lines

Helping Rural Homes

Many rural communities in the Bono Region still experience:

  • Low or unreliable electricity supply
  • High connection costs
  • Power cuts

This project focuses only on basic electricity needs, not heavy machinery. It is designed for simple, everyday home use.

According to E-Bono’s team, the goal is to:

  • Reduce energy poverty
  • Support students with lighting for evening studies
  • Help small traders operate longer
  • Improve safety at night

Affordable and Community-Based

Instead of paying large connection fees, families will pay a small usage or subscription fee to access the battery system. The company says this model keeps electricity affordable for ordinary households.

Community members may also be trained to:

  • Manage the charging stations
  • Maintain the batteries
  • Create local jobs

A Local Solution for a Local Need

E-Bono believes that just as electric bikes are changing transportation, portable electricity can change village life.

If successful, the company plans to expand the project across more rural communities in the Bono Region and eventually to other parts of Ghana.

The project is expected to begin pilot testing later this year.

For many families in rural villages, this could mean a simple but powerful change — light at night, phone charging at home, and a step toward a brighter future.
